In 2014, Hong Kong immigration officer Leung Chun-kwong married his partner of about a decade in New Zealand, where same-sex marriage had become legal the previous year. On Friday, a High Court judge in Hong Kong, which doesn’t recognize same-sex marriages, said that Leung’s husband was entitled to the same benefits available to the spouses of heterosexual employees of the civil service, the South China Morning Post reported over the weekend.

As societies become wealthier, they don’t necessarily become happier. It’s called the Easterlin paradox, named for happiness economist Richard Easterlin. He observed in 2012 that people in China appeared to be experiencing the paradox. They had reported more happiness overall in 1990, before the country’s economic transition, than they did two decades later, perhaps due to a growing inequality in happiness itself—in 2010, a far smaller share of people in the lowest income group reported high life satisfaction than previously.

Hong Kong announced on Sunday that Carrie Lam, the candidate viewed as most favored by Beijing, will be the special-status territory’s new chief executive, the first woman to fill that position. She won 777 of the 1,163 valid votes cast, the returning official said, a result that is likely to shore up Hong Kong’s perception that China isn’t adhering to the “one country, two systems” policy that entitles the former British colony to greater freedom and political choice than prevails in the mainland.

Beginning last October, South Koreans began gathering weekly to protest against president Park Geun-hye, after news reports that she had been unduly influenced by a close confidante. In December, days after a massive gathering in the capital’s Gwanghwamun Square, the South Korean parliament voted to impeach Park. Last Friday, a court upheld that vote.
