In March, the fast food giant McDonald’s announced that it would work with suppliers to stop using antibiotics important to humans in its chicken. Now Tyson Foods, a top supplier to McDonald’s for decades and the largest meat processor in the United States, has announced that it is planning to wholly eliminate the use of human antibiotics in its chickens in the US by September 2017.

Law school used to be a ticket to a somewhat lucrative lifestyle in the United States. At the very least, graduates could expect to be employed as lawyers. But that hasn’t been true for the class of 2010.

Corporate buyouts run the gamut from quick, collegial, Warren Buffett-style transactions, to messy, drawn-out battles with poison-pill takeover defenses, heated rhetoric, and general unpleasantness.

The numbers: Grim. Sales were $5.9 billion in the first quarter, down 11% from the same quarter last year.  Guest traffic was down in all major segments. Global same store sales decreased 2.3%, with the biggest declines coming in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa (8.3%) and in the US (2.6%). Operating income was down 28% year over year, which includes nearly $200 million in charges from restaurant closures and other restructuring.

The numbers: Disappointing, but only compared to the high bar previously set by Chipotle. Sales at stores open more than a year were up 10.4% compared to the same quarter last year. Sales reached $1.09 billion, a 20.9% increase. Both metrics fell short of Wall Street’s estimates, and the stock was down more than 5% after hours. Chipotle is forecasting comparable sales over the next few months to be in the “low-to-mid single digits.” It’s growing, but at a slower pace.

Today, Israeli drug maker Teva announced that it wants to buy fellow generic manufacturer Mylan, worth $40 billion, in what would be the tenth largest pharma deal of all time. The hostile takeover bid, aimed at beefing up Teva’s generic drugs business, comes just weeks after Mylan announced it was attempting to buy Perrigo for around $30 billion.

Most statistics having to do with law school in the US have been pretty depressing. Enrollment has plummeted compared with fields like engineering, and test scores and standards are declining. It shouldn’t be a surprise that pay isn’t exactly roaring for new grads.

A better economy and the booming tech industry may be making people a bit less inclined to go to business school. According to data released by US News and crunched by Poets & Quants, nearly all of the top ten business schools in the country were less selective last year. Only Harvard was tougher to get into than it was in 2013, and only very slightly so:

The proposed merger between Kraft and Heinz engineered by Warren Buffett and the Brazillian private equity behemoth 3G would bring storied brands including Velveeta, Oscar Mayer, Heinz ketchup, and Kool-Aid under one roof. That pile of brands represents a uniquely American culinary heritage, though it’s not entirely a source of national pride, and it certainly doesn’t contain the components of a healthy diet, no matter what Buffett might say.

The gender pay gap in the United States varies by job, but one of the places it’s starkest is at the top of the corporate ladder.
